dimcorridor_es3310.jpg
This picture shows a shot of a corridor where the lighting
conditions is very dim. It was taken using the DigiCam ES3310 digital camera.
From this picture, we can see that the camera seems to add a lot of noise to
the output image when the lighting conditions is very dim. This can be seen in
the regions marked by the blue rectangles and I have also hightlighted them in
the two pictures below.

You can also see that in the region marked by the red
rectangle, the area is overexposed and the color has become washed out. This is
because the camera settings was tuned to capture the regions under the dim
light, and as a result, it has neglected the range of luminance that was
present in the brighter regions (like that in the red rectangle). This caused
all the pixels in that part to be be pushed to the hightest value, which is the
color white. I checked the settings and found that for this picture, the
exposure time was 1/4 sec, which is very long. The picture would be better if
the camera could capture both details in bright and dark regions correctly. The
same picture under the same lighting conditions was also taken using the
Olympus D580 digital camera and the result is much better. You can find it
here.
